All about Gurupurab or Guru Nanak Jayanti 2024

Guru Nanak Jayanti or Gurupurab is the birth anniversary of the first sikh guru, Guru Nanak Dev Ji, which is celebrated on 15th November. On 15th November 2024 it is his 555th birth anniversary.

 

Guru Nanak Jayanti is one of the most important day for sikh religion, followers and devotees of Guru Nanak Dev Ji celebrate this day with pure spiritual intention and joy, while offering prayers to the Guru. This day is also widely known as Gurupurab and Guru Prakash Utsav.

History of Guru Nanak Jayanti

 

Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born on 15th April 1469, the birth place was village of Talwandi ( Which is now a part of PAkistan and is known as Nankana Sahib). He was born in a Hindu family his father name was Mehta Kalu, and mother name was Mata Tripta. Guru Nanak Ji was raised in a normal household, but he was different form the other of his age, he was attracted towards spiritual energy and deep meditation. 

 

From a young age, he always stood against discrimination, unethical rituals and inequality. From childhood he was always helpful to the poor or weaker section of the society. At the age of 30 he went missing for 3 days and when he returned his fist statement was “No one is Muslim, No one is Hindi, and Christian, all the humans on this planet are equal and humanity is above everything.

 

Guru Nanak Jayanti 2024: How it is celebrated

 

On this spiritual day people usually go to the gurudwaras to get blessing of the Gurus. People perform various puja and rituals with spiritual activities. Visiting the gurdwara is the main ritual in Sikh religion. The biggest gurdwara “The Golden Temple” is decorated with beautiful flowers and lights.

 

Some of the devotees organize nagar kirtan where people get together and carry Guru Granth Sahib Ji on their head, and walk a long distance bare foot to the gurudwara. After reaching the Gurudwara Guru Granth Sahib Ji is placed in where everyone can see and perform prayers. People often light diyas, candle and do Langar sewa. A large number of donations are also made on this spiritual day.

 

Guru Nanak Jayanti is not associated with sikhism only but Guru Nanak Dev Ji was a Spiritual guru and everyone should learn their teachings and implement them in their life.
